Char’s has the Blues
Char’s Has the Blues has a rich history that spans several decades. The property where the club is located was built in 1944 and originally served as a house. In the early ’60s, it was transformed into a ballet studio, which it remained until 1981.
In 1985, the property was turned into a bar and became Char’s Has the Blues. It was opened by Jim and Char Rymond and quickly became a beloved part of Phoenix culture, hosting R&B, blues, soul, and funk acts. The club was known for its intimate setting, with a crowded parquet dance floor just inches from the live musicians.
Over the years, Char’s Has the Blues featured many performers, including Soul Power and Laydee Jai. These artists and others contributed to the club’s reputation as a home for the Valley blues community.
